‘Hello, I’m Krist the perfectly imperfect Psychologist’
To some that might sound like a strange way for a psychologist to advertise themselves?
Throughout my training the message of professionalism and boundaries has been hammered home (with very good reason!) But, if there is one thing I have learned from receiving and providing therapy, no one wants to talk about the hard stuff with someone who appears to have no flaws.
Talking about the hard stuff takes bravery! It takes a willingness to be vulnerable! Letting people into our inner world means being exposed to potential judgement or even worse, rejection... That is some scary sh*&t!
So, why is appearing to be “ok” so important?... Needing acceptance from others, falling in line, going under the radar, keeping your sh*$t together? …Because my friends, our brains are wired for human connection.
When we feel like we are not good enough, a failure, or something is wrong with us our THREAT / SURVIVAL systems kick in and the fear of being imperfect, being rejected, worse still "going nuts" or "lost my self/mojo" is a horrid place to be.
Depressed, anxious, lonely, isolating, stressed, angry, reactive...this is the time when reaching out is the hardest !! AND (shitty as it is) it's also the time we are most in need of human connection.
The purpose of this page is to introduce myself and my services to my community, reduce the stigma and misinformation about accessing mental health support and to live by my values of authenticity, connection and empowerment.
I am a psychologist, wife (someone’s ex-wife), mum (step-mum), daughter, sister, employee, colleague, friend, neighbour, and also just ME (Krist) a perfectly imperfect human living on the Central Coast of NSW. Like you, I get up every day and try to bring my best, some days I do pretty good, some days I fall short of my own expectations… I am, and will always be, a work in progress.
For support with your personal ‘works in progress’ feel free to message me via this page, or email me at krist.thomson.psychologist@gmail.com
